Summer 2002 Newsletter

Happy Springtime everyone! We have some interesting choices for you this season! Here is your chance to read all about them.

New President, Marie Hennessy

As your new President, I am eager to take on the exciting challenge of working to make NERSFL the best that it can be. It is as a result of the great work of my predecessors, Chris Nason and Lill Johnson, that we are where we are today. I have two very hard acts to follow. I would like to thank Claire Morrissette and Janice Bianculli for all the wonderful work they have done for NERSFL. It's been a pleasure to work with them. Please welcome our two new Board members: Sandie Page and Jean Shiner. They have already begun working diligently. I thank them for agreeing to serve on the NERSFL Board.

Blind Stokers Tandem Ride

Saturday, June 22 at 9 am. Meet at the Commuter Rail Parking Lot in Lincoln, MA. There will be the choice of a 20 mile or a 30 mile route depending on ability and endurance level. The ride will go through Lincoln, Sudbury, Concord and Carlisle. Cue sheets will be provided. Bring your own lunch or buy at Rosie's Sandwich Shop in Carlisle Center. Single bikers are also welcome. We need tandems and captains to make this ride go. A helmet is necessary. If you have extra ones, please bring them along to loan and, if possible, please bring pedals with regular toe clips. If you have an extra tandem, please bring that, too.

We're hoping for a beautiful day, of course. If the weather looks questionable, call Mark Remaly at (781) 391-2943 to see if the ride will go. If you have any questions, you can call Mark at this number or email him at Your donation of $10 will help cover expenses.

Payments and Refund Policy

Please make payments by check made out to New England Regional Ski for Light and mail to NERSFL, P.O.Box 234, Foxboro, MA 02035-0234. You must send the total payment for one-day trips. You may submit either a deposit of $25 or the entire cost for the week-end trip. All deposits must be received by June 5. The balance due for the week-end trip must be received by July l. All deposits are nonrefundable. The balance for the week-end trip is nonrefundable unless your space can be filled. We will do our best to assist you to find a substitute, but it is ultimately your responsibility to find a replacement.

Financial assistance is available for people who cannot afford the full cost of a trip. To be considered, submit a letter of need with the application.

Please be sure to fill out and submit the trip Registration Form.

Enclosed are forms for you to complete and send with your payments. All forms must be filled out and signed before you can participate in the event. For your own health and safety, NERSFL requires all participants, sighted or not, to complete the personal health form. This confidential record requires your candid, accurate and legible completion. Every item in every section must be completed. Mark N/A if any section is not applicable to you.

Physical Condition

Anyone in average physical condition can expect to complete these events. If we have any questions about your ability to participate, we will call and discuss it with you. In questionable cases, the decision to participate will lie with the participant and his or her physician. Participants must take responsibility for their own health problems at these events. Your enjoyment will be enhanced by any measures you take to improve your physical fitness and stamina before the event.

Transportation will be available by car-pooling. You will be contacted about a week before an event to make travel arrangements. Guides are encouraged to let us know if they are willing to drive and how many passengers they will be able to take. All passengers are expected to contribute generously towards the cost of gasoline. Please note that if you are coming to an event from out of town, do not make travel plans (flights, trains, bus, etc.) prior to 7:00 PM on the final day of the event. It is very difficult to guarantee a return to transportation centers prior to this time without disrupting other participants.

Presidential Traverse Marathon Fundraiser

On June 16 Evan Lenson will hike the Presidential Traverse [Madison, Adams, Jefferson, Clay, Washington, Monroe, Franklin, Eisenhower, Pierce, Jackson and Webster Mountains] in memory of his friend George Skillman, who inspired him to take his first Presidential Traverse. This is a 23.5 mile hike that will probably take 17 hours more or less to complete. He's doing this as a benefit for NERSFL.
