NEWS BITS

November, 1998

Hi everyone!!

NERSFL is pleased to announce that we will be sponsoring Lil Johnson to attend this year's International event. Lil has been an active participant and terrific champion of NERSFL for over seventeen years. For the last six years, Lil has acted as the chairperson of our region and has skillfully and energetically led the group through many events and activities. There is no one more deserving of this sponsorship than Lil. The 1999 SFL International event is being held in Anchorage, Alaska, from February 21-28, 1999. Experienced guides are still needed. For information, please contact Claire Morrissette.

We also want to let everyone know about the great success of our fall fundraiser. We raised almost $2,000 and had fun doing it. Thanks to all who helped out!

Your friend,
Tony Terranova
Asstant Chairperson

Trip Reviews!

Great Glen Trails--
Our January 22-24 weekend skiing at Great Glen Trails was a resounding success!  A record number of spirited people attended.  With 30 VIPs and 31 guides, this was the biggest trip ever!  It also created an opportunity for 8 new guides to be successfully trained – another record!

Saturday’s conditions were great both for skiers and for the adventuresome band of novices trekking through the woods on snowshoes.  Despite the heavy rain on Saturday night into Sunday which forced the group to abandon any thought of skiing, everyone enjoyed themselves!

Both new participants and old-timers look forward to seeing one another again at the Internationals in Alaska, at Bretton Woods during the first weekend in March or at the many spring and summer activities which NERSFL is now planning.

Bretton Woods--
Well, NERSFL's winter 1999 x-country ski season has drawn to a close - but
not before the completion of another successful weekend.  Forty two VIPS and
guides managed to find every last flake of ski-able snow (thank goodness for
the few inches of powder that fell late Saturday!).  We enjoyed the
excellent hospitality and track grooming offered by our friends at Bear
notch on Saturday and the seemingly endless miles of trails at Bretton Woods
on Sunday.  It was great to see so many of the January weekend's guide
trainees return as full-fledged guides along with yet more new trainees and
some very 'old' veterans.

With skiing sadly behind us, we'll just turn our attention towards spring
and summer.  This promises to be a busy season for NERSFL with a hiking
weekend, tandem bike ride, canoe trip and nature walks in the works.
