Bretton Woods - AMC Highlands NH
March 6-8, 2009
I sit here on a gray rainy day, neither warm enough to call ‘spring’ or cold and dry enough for cross country skiing. While I yearn for those warm sunny days, a trip back to March 6-8 would also be welcome.
Bretton Woods has long been a favorite place to cross country ski due to the abundance and variety of its trails. However, we’d all but abandoned it due to the high expense of lodging. This season that problem was solved with a stay at the AMC’s newest facility, the Highland Center. Its simple and extremely clean rooms and hearty food combined with reasonable rates proved more than adequate. And. . . they even loan out all kinds of outdoor clothing and gear to guests at no cost!
That is how 9 ‘VIP’s’ (2 of whom were new to NERSFL) and a plethora of guides found ourselves basking in the 50 degree sunshine while we cross country skied and snowshoed the weekend days away. We were absolutely thrilled to train and include so many new guides including 2 from Massachusetts and nine(!) who participate in the Bretton Woods Adaptive Program. It seems like they liked being with us as much as we enjoyed being with them, and there are promises of summer hiking and kayaking with the Bretton program as well as more x-c skiing and snowshoeing next winter.
